Chapter Six

Palm Springs—Buenos Aires, Round Trip

Tonya all but disappeared in Buenos Aires, into an everyday life that was almost identical to what she knew. She had filed all the paperwork earlier, found a job via a friend of a friend who helped on her side with obtaining the necessary visa.

She spoke Spanish well enough for the daily life, spent her nights creating colorful drinks for admiring strangers, waiting tables, making allies against the loneliness creeping up on her.

In over two months, she hadn’t once tackled the question of why running away from home had suddenly become so urgent.

She missed Chelsea, so what? It was nice, flattering, to become the center of someone’s attention, but there was no way the two of them could have worked in the long run. While standing her up might not have been the gentlest way to let her down, it could have been worse.

Chelsea had taken baby steps out of the closet, daring to go hang out in a lesbian bar, trying to make friends—but what if she was ready to go back at the first chance? She had signaled her interest clearly, but if she thought there were no conditions, she was kidding herself. Sex would lead to emotional entanglement, at least it would for Chelsea, and that was something Tonya wanted to avoid.

She’d stop thinking about her so much eventually.

“What are you thinking?” Malena asked. She had been a trusty companion for a few weeks now, showing Tonya around places and restaurants aside from the usual tourist hangouts, introducing her to friends. Tonight, they had snuck away from their group, to Malena’s apartment.

Contrary to popular belief, Tonya Gray didn’t put out on the first date.

Regardless, she wasn’t willing to share her thoughts. Malena might think of them as ungrateful—and be right.

What the hell had happened? She liked women. She liked to date, she liked sex. For the most part, Tonya had managed to find partners who were on the same page.

Truth be told, she had known that Chelsea spelled trouble from the first time she saw her, a bi-curious girl lost in a world that wasn’t her own. At least that was the way she’d seen her back then. Usually they were easy to sort out, but somehow, she liked spending time with her. She was looking forward to some time alone even more than hanging out with the girls.

“You’re beautiful,” she said, because it seemed to be the right thing to say given the situation, but her words lacked meaning, and Malena wasn’t stupid.

“It would be nicer hearing that if you weren’t so distracted. Who’s the girl back home?”

“There’s no one.”

Malena’s doubtful look told Tonya that she didn’t believe her. She sighed. “I left things kind of…unresolved. Not for me,” she hurried to say.

“Of course not.” Malena laughed. “You’re worried she’s not over you, is that what you’re saying?”

“No, that’s not what I’m saying. It would be very conceited of me, wouldn’t it? I’m shocked you would think such a thing of me.
